Philip Blenkinsop workshop Barcelona

Barcelona 03 - 07 November 2008 with the collaboration of Centre de Fotografia Documental de Barcelona

The photography workshops form part of TRAFIC 08, Barcelona.

THE STREETS OF BARCELONA with Philip Blenkinsop

In Barcelona, come November, we will come together and explore the city and our relationship with it. We will avoid clichés and other people's preconceived notions of the place and work towards baring its soul, and the soul of any place can be found in the human traces and the interaction of its inhabitants. The myriad of fleeting and seemingly inconsequential moments that form the palette of life is what interests us. We will craft our personal stories from the city's moods and heartbeat, intertwined with our own relationship to the place and the people. Private insights imbued with the energy of the street. We'll look at and discuss ways of seeing and interpreting scenes that pull the viewer into the image and hold their eye. The longer we can keep someone in an image, the more of a hold it develops over them, and the more receptive they become to our message. We will endeavor to become more aware of different elements and 'planes' of interaction at the time we are shooting and push ourselves into more intimate situations, working close in crowds and conquering that phobia that so many of us have of confronting people with our lens. We will discover how the camera can be used to disarm people. It's liberating once we achieve this, and once achieved, we never lose it and the whole art of observing becomes a more intense and enjoyable one. With that, we'll discover how to work quickly and openly without being noticed. Barcelona provides the perfect life-on-the-streets venue for us to explore. We'll edit, both one on one and as a group and we will discuss methods of approach, but the main focus of the week will be more on getting out and shooting, spending as much time on the streets as we can and identifying and developing our personal styles.

I would like to ask everyone to prepare a short presentation/talk, (of between five to ten minutes) with images by way of an introduction to your photography and your lives. We will share these with the group on day one. Your presentation should include a self-portrait, the only specification I make, being that you must have been moving when you took it. The presentation is about you, your photography, and your thoughts... everything that makes you who you are.

No one will require more than a single camera and a single lens. And that lens should be not wider than 24mm and not longer than 50mm. Ideally a 35mm lens... If a zoom is all you have, the first thing we will do is tape it at a fixed focal length and it will not move for the week! I promise you. Leave your tripods at home where they can be put to better use as hat and coat stands and WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES!
